Description | The wastewater treatment plant at Arklow, County Wicklow, designed by Clancy Moore Architects, transforms a vital piece of infrastructure into a civic landmark. The project includes two large treatment sheds and a smaller administration building, designed to be conspicuous and of high design quality on a prominent coastal site. The plant treats sewage, greywater, and surface run-off for a projected population of 36,000, with features such as stacked treatment processes to reduce energy consumption, open louvres for ventilation, and a 930-metre outfall pipe to the sea. The project faced a protracted planning battle but was ultimately completed to support the town's growth and improve local ecology. |
