Description

The Ashburton Salt project was a proposal to evaporate briny water and harvest salt south of Onslow, Western Australia. The project was first announced in 2016, with a planned cost of $850 million and an operational target year of 2022. The project faced environmental concerns due to its potential impact on the Exmouth Gulf wetlands, a site of national significance and nursery for Ningaloo Reef species. The project was ultimately scrapped by K+S due to a change in the company's worldwide strategic direction, which no longer includes growth in international salt production.
