Description | In June 2002 the municipalities of Barrancas, Distraccion, El Molino, and Villanueva, awarded a 12-year concession for their water and sewerage services to private operator Aguas del Sur de la Guajira SA. The project included provisions for the installation of new connections in addition to operation and maintenance of the existing water and sewerage collection systems. The operator was to provide services to a population of 42,700 residents (combined from the four municipalities). The project company, Aguas del Sur de la Guajira S.A., was owned by the Colombian firm Grupo Hydros. Financing for the project’s total US$0.8 million investment was achieved primarily through government support: federal government support (US$0.3 million), municipal support (US$0.3 million), with a small contribution from the concessionaire (US$0.2 million).
