Description | Pitkin County is preparing to accept a $9.6 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration originally committed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project involves shifting the runway 80 feet to the west to increase the gap between the runway centerline and the taxiway centerline and widening the runway to 150 feet to meet FAA standards. Enabling projects for the runway changes will begin in summer 2026, with construction closures starting in April 2027. The overall airport modernization project, including runway and terminal construction, is projected to cost around $575 million, with much of the runway funding expected from federal grants. |
