Description
Description | The present emergency aid operation, amounting to two million US dollars, responds to the extremely serious locust situation in the countries of North West Africa (Algeria, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Tunisia). Since March 2004, new hopper bands and swarms have formed in northern Mauritania where limited resources have hampered control operations. Despite efforts in all the countries concerned, international assistance is urgently needed to prevent a further deterioration of the situation. These Bank grant resources will be used to purchase pesticides and lease aircraft for aerial treatments. |
