Infrastructure is a priority area of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) initiative, founded in 2001 by African heads of state. The Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (IPPF) located at NEPAD is primarily intended to promote the implementation of projects within the framework of PIDA (Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa). The fund is managed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) on behalf of NEPAD. KfW supports the fund with capital. The Skills Initiative for Africa promotes the career prospects of young Africans by supporting and disseminating innovative approaches to practice-oriented training and further education. The heart of the Skills Initiative is a financing facility located at the African Union Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD and supported by KfW with EUR 88 million. The facility finances innovative employment-oriented projects in eight pilot countries. Public and private organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations and companies, can apply for funding for the construction or maintenance of infrastructure, for technical or teaching equipment, and for scholarships. The project finances a public institution (NEPAD), which then distributes the funds for infrastructure projects in the educational sector to public-private partnerships (PPPs). The funds are used for educational and training institutions. The aim of the project is to contribute to the development of infrastructure in Africa. By supporting the preparation of financially viable and sustainable infrastructure projects in the areas of energy, transport, water and ICT, public and private donors are to be attracted. The target group is the consumers of energy, transport and other economic infrastructure services in Africa.
