Description | The AUKUS pact signed in 2021 between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States involves Australia procuring up to three used Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines from the US starting in the early 2030s, with options for two more. Subsequently, a new nuclear-powered submarine model will be developed and built for the British and Australian navies, produced in Britain and Australia using technologies from all three countries. Australia has committed A$368 billion ($239.3 billion) over 30 years for this defense project, including a $2 billion payment in 2025 to upgrade US submarine shipyards. |
