Description

Description

Tourism statistics play a crucial role in understanding and supporting the European tourism economy. In Germany, the existing innovative eSTATISTIK.core online reporting procedure enables automated data transmission from hotel management systems to the Statistical Offices, but is currently used by only a small number of accommodation providers. eSTATISTIKCore is an already existing innovative online reporting procedure that can serve as a pioneer for other member states in the low-burden, automated data collection from respondents. It is also the strategic objective of Destatis to make increased use of this system. This project aims to expand the adoption of the eSTATISTIK.core online reporting procedure by actively involving hotel associations, software vendors and probably additional accommodation providers. Beyond hotels, the project will explore the possible integration of other accommodation types such as holiday apartments and campsites. Another key innovation is the potential linkage with data provided by platform operators under the new EU Regulation 2024/1028, which mandates data transmission from online accommodation platforms. This could enable the inclusion of small-scale accommodations with fewer than 10 beds, which are traditionally not captured in accommodation statistics. We will also explore the possible purchase of available credit card data. By automating data collection, the project will reduce administrative burdens on accommodation providers and minimize manual reporting errors. This approach aligns with the modernization goals of the European Statistical System (ESS) and contributes to the EU’s broader objectives for digital transformation and sustainable tourism data. Other member states could benefit from Destatis's existing expertise regarding the innovative online reporting procedure. This applies to both tourism and other statistics.
