Autonomous All-Electric Train Cars by Parallel Systems

Parallel Systems, in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has developed autonomous all-electric train cars designed to improve freight delivery efficiency. These self-driving railcars can travel up to 500 miles on a single charge using existing rail lines and are equipped with sensors integrated into NREL's Advanced Locomotive Technology and Rail Infrastructure Optimization System. The technology aims to reduce delivery times by almost 70%, minimize cargo buildup at freight terminals, and enable the construction of smaller, less expensive terminals in new locations with good rail access but limited space. The project targets increasing rail usage and reducing carbon pollution from trucking.
