The Axis Project is a fitness community space for people with disabilities and seniors, created to provide a non-medical facility for socializing and fitness. After pandemic-related closures of two locations, a new space in East Harlem was found and rebuilt from an abandoned state with no copper, electrical wiring, or plumbing. The founder, George Gallego, personally undertook much of the reconstruction work over two and a half years, followed by a year of inspections by the New York City Department of Buildings. The space opened to members about a year and a half ago but is now facing closure and relocation, with efforts underway to secure funding and a new lease to continue operations.
