Description | The Aysha I wind energy project is the largest wind farm in the Horn of Africa, located in the Somali region of Ethiopia. It aims to strengthen Ethiopia's renewable energy capacity, support sustainable economic growth, and mitigate climate change. The project covers 18,000 hectares and is expected to generate 1,400 GWh annually, powering around 4 million households and reducing carbon emissions by 690,000 tonnes. Construction started in February 2024, with 32 turbines, a switchyard, and residential units for staff being installed. The project is financed by Ethiopian Electric Power and the Export-Import Bank of China, with a total cost of $620 million. It is built and operated by AMEA Power under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Ethiopian Electric Power. |
