The development objectives of the Water Resources Management Project in the State of Bahia are: a) provide reliable and sustainable access to water for potable, municipal, industrial, and irrigation uses in priority river basins, primarily in areas with high concentration of poor rural households; b) promote participatory management and rational use of water resources, focusing on three priority river basins, Itapicuru, Jacare-Verde and Alto Paraguacu; c) develop sustainable administration, operation and management systems for rural water supply and irrigation infrastructure; and d) develop an institutional model/prototype for all the river basins within Bahia, with concepts which could be applicable to other states. The project has two components: 1) water resources management, to provide the necessary technical and financial resources to strengthen the State of Bahia's basins and user level institutions to effectively manage water resources; and 2) infrastructure investments, to finance the construction and rehabilitation of water resources storage and distribution infrastructure in the Itapicuru River Basin.
