Description

In September 2007, AI Airports International completed the acquisition of 99.9% share in Baikal Airport (Ulan Ude)in the Russian Republic of Buryatia. By the end of 2008, the company acquired the remaining 0.1%, that brought its holding to 100%. The acquisition costs for the airport amounted to approximately US$23 million and included the acquisition of the terminal and other buildings as well as the operating rights for the airport. With a runway of 3,000 meters, newly built in 2006, the airport could accommodate long-haul flights. At the beginning of 2008, the airport submitted an application for an international license. Before starting these operations the company had to ensure that all security and operational requirements for such international flights were fulfilled and approved by the local and Russian governments. AI expected to be granted all necessary approvals by end of 2008. In the first nine months of 2008, Baikal Airport served 110,740 passengers.
