Description
Description | The government of Azerbaijan, through its Ministry of State Property, awarded a 25 year concession for the Baku Electricity Distribution Network (BEDN) to Turkish firm BARMEK Holding. In 2002 BEDN supplied 5.34 million kWh of electricity to about 500,000 residential and non-residential customers. The concession contract was awarded as result of an international tender held on November 24, 2000. BARMEK was a diversified Turkish holding company that covered a range of operations, from electricity and defense contracts to various construction work. BARMEK Holding created Barmek Azerbaijan Electrical Distribution Networks Ltd. to operate BEDN. On January 1st, 2002 BAMERK Azerbaijan effectively began to operate BEDN. There was three a year moratorium on electricity tariff increases, valid through the end of 2003. BARMEK committed to make new investments totaling some $230 million over the lifetime of the concession. In July 2006, after months of mutual accusations, arrests, investigations, and political statements, the Turkish electricity company Barmek discontinued tis operations of electricity distribution companies in Baku, Sumgait (a major industrial town in the north of Baku) and the whole northern part of Azerbaijan.
