Baldwin Property Wildfire Mitigation Project

The Baldwin Property Wildfire Mitigation Project is a wildfire mitigation and habitat enhancement initiative led by Colorado West Land Trust (CWLT) on a conserved property in Plateau Valley, Colorado. The project aims to protect people, infrastructure, and natural resources by establishing a 300-foot-wide firebreak and using a mosaic approach to clear certain clusters of vegetation while leaving others intact. It mitigates risks to infrastructure such as water pipes, the Vega Reservoir canal, the Molina Power Plant, and the Cottonwood Creek watershed. The project also benefits wildlife and watershed health by creating travel corridors for big game, increasing herbaceous forage, and reducing soil erosion. The project is scheduled for phased implementation, treating approximately 25 acres annually, and is estimated to be completed by June 2028. It is supported by grants from the Colorado Youth Corps Association and Great Outdoors Colorado.
