The Banakacherla reservoir project is an ambitious plan by Andhra Pradesh to link the Godavari and Krishna River basins through a chain of reservoirs, canals, and lift irrigation schemes. It aims to transform the drought-prone Rayalaseema region into fertile land by diverting surplus Godavari water to the Krishna basin. The project involves enhancing canal capacities, constructing reservoirs at Bollapalli and Banakacherla, and establishing lift stations and tunnels through the Nallamala forest. The estimated cost is Rs 80,112 crore, requiring acquisition of 40,500 acres including forest land. The project faces opposition from Telangana and environmental concerns, and has not yet received necessary approvals.
