Banana Field Gene Bank

The National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) in Tiruchy launched the first Banana Field Gene Bank in India to support banana genetic conservation and prevent loss of valuable genetic resources. Farmers growing rare banana varieties can register with NRCB, where scientists will preserve and develop these varieties for multiplication. The government supports the establishment of field gene banks for crops like coconut, banana, and paddy to conserve genetic diversity and enable large-scale multiplication and utilization of conserved plant varieties. Farmers preserving unique varieties will be awarded and recognized, with cash prizes and conservation funding.
