Description | The Barrow Green Hydrogen project is a 30MW renewable hydrogen production facility in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, UK. It is delivered by Green Hydrogen Energy Company (GHECO), a joint venture between Schroders Greencoat and Carlton Power. The project includes six 5MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers supplied by Plug Power, powered by renewable electricity under a long-term power purchase agreement with SEFE. The hydrogen produced will be used by Kimberly-Clark to reduce natural gas consumption by up to 50%, cutting 18,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Construction started in summer 2026 with commercial operation expected by 2028. |
