Description

Description

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects are experiencing cost resilience despite lithium price volatility. Lithium price increases have driven less than a 5% rise in total BESS capital expenditure across major markets. Technical improvements, such as larger format cells and higher capacity racks, have simplified system architecture and reduced costs. China retains a significant cost advantage over the US, with Chinese battery packs priced more than 40% lower. Sodium ion batteries have emerged as a lower cost alternative with up to 40% savings potential. Regulatory changes in China have shifted the market from policy-driven deployment to a market-led approach, causing a short-term decline in new installations but expected to result in more efficient and higher quality projects over time.
