Description
Description | BC Hydro’s customer, Creative Energy, is the owner and operator of one of the largest district energy systems in North America. Creative Energy’s steam plant at 720 Beatty Street in Vancouver, British Columbia, operates by burning natural gas in six industrial steam boilers. Responding to local, national and global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets and aspirations, Creative Energy plans to reconfigure its plant to install new electric steam boilers. Powered by clean energy through a new underground power line connected to BC Hydro’s electricity grid, the decarbonization project would avoid emissions from Creative Energy’s system by approximately 48,600 tonnes of CO2e and provide low-carbon energy for 12 million square feet of new developmentequivalent to all of the development in downtown Vancouver for the foreseeable future. The BC Hydro Customer Connection Project: Creative Energy Decarbonization (the project) includes the design and construction of an approximately 1.2 km long underground power line from BC Hydro’s Murrin substation in Chinatown to the Beatty Street plant. This will enable BC Hydro to supply Creative Energy with 30 megawatts (MW) of clean and renewable electricity. To connect Creative Energy to BC Hydro’s electrical grid the following work is required: -design and construction of a new 60 kilovolt underground power line from BC Hydro’s Murrin substation to Creative Energy’s plant at 720 Beatty Street-the line will be approximately 1.2 km in length; -construction of new duct bank; -installation of a circuit breaker and surge arrester at the Murrin substation; and -protection and control work at the Murrin substation. |
