Description
Description | BC Hydro will construct a new switching station, Treaty Creek Terminal, to supply the KSM Mine with 245 megawatts (MW) of clean and renewable electricity - of which 25 MW will be used during the construction phase. Once construction of the switching station is complete, the customer will be able to connect to the grid for both the construction and operations. Typically the construction phase of a mine is powered by diesel generators. By using electricity versus fossil fuels during construction of the twin 23-kilometre-long access and ore haulage tunnels, it is expected to reduce GHG emissions by approximately 59,000 tCO2e and eliminate over 22.3 million litres of diesel fuel over the four-year construction period. During the mine production phase, the customer will electrify various components of the operation such as conveyors, crushers, air compressors, mobile equipment and underground ventilation systems. Electrification of these systems is expected to reduce emissions by about 43,300 tonnes CO2e on an annual basis. To supply the customer with 245 MW of clean, renewable electricity, Project works include: Construction of a new switching station; and, All related works. |
