BC Hydro’s customer, Fraser Health, is building the new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre in the Cloverdale neighbourhood of Surrey, British Columbia. Construction on the hospital is expected to begin in 2023; it’s anticipated the new hospital will open to patients in 2027. The new hospital will include 168 inpatient beds, five operating rooms, an emergency department with 55 treatment spaces along with advanced diagnostic services and state-of-the-art medical imaging equipment, along with an integrated cancer centre. The BC Hydro Customer Connection Project: Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre Electrification (the project) includes the design and construction of the necessary electrical infrastructure to enable electrification of 100% of the facility. This project will allow BC Hydro to supply the hospital and cancer centre with 8.8 megawatts (MW) of clean and renewable electricity. The purpose of this project is to deliver the necessary electrical infrastructure to enable electrification of the new health care facility. Specifically, the project scope includes the extension of a 25 kilovolt circuit from BC Hydro’s Fleetwood substation and a 25 kilovolt circuit from McLellan substation to serve the new hospital and cancer centre. At a high level, this includes: • Construction of approx. 14km of underground feeder cable; • Construction of approx. 2km of overhead pole line; • Construction of approx. 2.7km of new, underground duct bank; and, • All related works.
