Be an Active EU Teacher: Enhancing the Teaching of the EU through Teacher Trainings

The project is a direct response to a current reform in Slovenian education system at ISCED 3 level where the problem of inadequate level of EU content was recognized. Consequently, a new subject and cross-curricular theme of Active citizenship was developed and will be implemented starting in 2022/2023 school year. The ISCED 3 teachers who teach subjects related to social studies, expressed their inadequate level of knowledge about the EU (Novak et al. 2020; Eurydice 2020) and a lack of concrete opportunities to receive further education and a lack of appealing teaching materials. This project aims to systematically support the Slovenian ISCED 3 teachers to improve their knowledge on EU matters and raise their confidence to teach the EU by developing, systemizing and implementing certified quality teacher trainings and providing tailored educational and teaching materials. The project has 3 PHASES: PHASE 1 - Establishing teacher community: preparatory activities. Outputs and deliverables: 8 regional kick-off events; Guidebook on experiential learning approach to teaching the EU; 3 developed teacher trainings systemized in official Slovenian training catalogue KATIS; 3 educational handbooks (Active EU citizenship, Green EU, Identity and the EU in everyday life). PHASE 2 - Collaborating with teacher community: teacher trainings on EU topics. Outputs and deliverables: Two series of 3 teacher trainings (3 different thematic modules) in two school years 2022/23 and 2023/24 - altogether 6 teacher trainings, 2 of them as training camps. Impact: 75 schools (approx. 70 percent of ALL Slovenian ISCED 3 schools) and 300 participants involved in teacher trainings. PHASE 3 - Deepening teacher community: teaching the EU in practice. Outputs and deliverables: Two series of 18 individual online training courses in two school years 2022/23 and 2023/24; Compendium of lesson plans for teaching the EU; 6 didactic videos on different EU topics; 6 showcase videos of teaching the EU.
