Description | The Bear Island Battery Storage facility is a proposed battery energy storage system located off White Marsh Road in Surry County. It will use 32.5 acres of a 416-acre parcel to construct a facility capable of storing and releasing 89 megawatts per hour of electricity over four hours. The project site will cover 10 acres surrounded by a 100-foot vegetative buffer and be at least 2,000 feet from the nearest home. The facility will consist of several rows of shipping container-sized outdoor units containing battery cells, managed by a battery management system to maintain temperature. It aims to support grid demand, especially related to data centers, and generate significant county revenue through taxes and payments for emergency response equipment. |
