Description
Description | The Bełchatów complex, Europe's largest open-pit coal mine and a cornerstone of Poland's power generation system, has begun its gradual shutdown as its coal reserves near depletion. The closure process started with the decommissioning of the 7,500-ton excavator K-42, which had operated since 1978. The mine fueled a power station supplying roughly one-fifth of Poland's electricity. The operator, state-controlled PGE GiEK, holds a mining license for the Bełchatów field only until the end of 2026, when the field is to be flooded and transformed into an artificial lake. |
