Beirut Container Terminal

In 2000 the Dubai Port Authority (DPA) won a contract to build and operate a new 700,000 TEU container terminal at the Beirut Port, Lebanon, for a 20-year period. A total investment of US$200 million was to be required to implement the project. Of this amount, the Dubai Port Authority was to contribute US$50 million and the Lebanese government was to fund US$150 million. As of 2000, more than 250,000 containers were handled at the port each year; the new terminal was to be capable of handling 400,000 containers per year. Construction work began in early 2000 and was completed in 2001. DPA withdrew from the contract in 2001 after disagreements over its fee, compensation to former contractors and lower-than-expected activity at the port, returning control of the terminal to the government. In July of 2004, International Port Management Beirut (IPMB), a consortium composed of U.S.-based International Maritime Associates (IMA) and the British Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (MDHC), won the international public tender to manage the container terminal at the Port of Beriut for 10 years.
