Description | The project company was awarded a 30 year BOT contract for a for a railway in Zimbabwe in 1998. After the contract period expires, ownership of the assets will be transferred back to the government. The shareholders were New Limpopo Bridge Projects Limited, Nedcor Investment Bank Limited, Sanlam, Old Mutual and Gensec Asset Management. All of them account for 85% of the shares while National Railways of Zimbabwe has the remaining 15%.Financial closure was achieved with funds from South African financiers, among them the First National Bank. Construction works have started and were expected to be completed by May 1999. The project was expected to cut freight costs by up to 20%. The railway was commissioned in July 1999, and the line provides the shortest rail link between South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. http://www.zimbabwesituation.com/jan13.html None |
