Description | BellSouth Guatemala was awarded three PCS frequencies for US$ 33.3 million in Guatemala in October 1999. The frequencies were granted through a competitive tender where the winner was the highest bidder. BellSouth was the fourth international company to acquire wireless frequencies in Guatemala. Comcel, a subsidiary of Millicom, was the first to enter in Guatemala in 1990. Telgua, the partially privatized telecom operator, was the second to obtain a PSC license. Telefonica International was the third one when it won two frequencies in a tender process in March 1999. BellSouth Guatemala planned to start its commercial started its operation in November 2000. The company pledged to invest US$ 200 million in its first two years of operation, but it had not disclosed the number of customers or annual investment figures by the end of 2000. In 2004 the Latin American telecom assets of BellSouth were sold to spanish firm Telefonica SA.
