Description
Description | Tele 2000 obtained a twenty-year concession to provide cellular phone services in Lima and surrounding areas in 1982. Tele 2000 received the concession from Radio Tele, company that won it through the creation of a joint venture with the government. Radio Tele was a mixed company in which the government had a 25% stake. Tele 2000 also acquired through a competitive bidding the concession to provide cellular phone services in the rest of the country in May 1998. Tele 2000, which was the sole bidder, won by offering US$ 35.1 million. Tele 2000 was owned by BellSouth (75 percent) and Gerano Delgado Parker by 1999. BellSouth bought its stake from Delgado Parker. Tele 2000 started operation in 1990 with a US$ 10 million investment and investment an additional US$ 20 million by 1995. After an ownership's transfer to BellSouth, the company expanded significantly its network development. The company competed with TIM Peru, and Telefonica del Peru, the privatized company that provided local, national, and international long distance services as well as cellular phone services in Peru under exclusive basis until 1999. BellSouth Peru launched their CDMA network in December 2003, shortly after their competitor Telefonica Moviles Peru launched a similar network. In 2004 BellSouth Peru was sold with the rest of the Latin American telecom assets of BellSouth to the Spanish firm Telefonica SA. Because the regulatory approval for merging Telefonica's two mobile operators in Peru - formerly BellSouth Peru and Telefonica Moviles Peru - occured in mid-2005, Telefonica operated the companies separately for one year and launched the brand Movistar. Tele 2000 invested $100 million in 2001. 2003 investment information obtained by dividing BellSouth's 2003 total Latin American capital expenditure by 2003 capacity for each subsidiary. None |
