The project includes placing giant precast concrete caissons on the seafloor about 800 meters offshore to form the offshore intake structure, which feeds seawater to the desalination system designed to produce about 7.9 million gallons of drinking water per day. The intake is designed to reduce beach disruption and uses a low-velocity design located above the seafloor nearly one kilometer offshore. The project also involves tunneling a pipeline beneath the seabed and Blacksmiths Beach to connect the intake to the plant. |
