Benin - Second Rural Electrification Project

The Second Rural Electrification Project is part of the rural electrification development programme developed by the Government of Benin. This programme should make it possible to achieve an electrification rate of 29% in the medium term in 2008 and, in the long term, electricity for all at a lower cost. This project aims to increase the rate of access to electricity for rural populations in order to improve their living conditions. The expected outcomes are: (i) electrification of 57 localities in 2008, (ii) improvement in the country's electrification rate from 20% in 2002 to 29% in 2008, and (iii) local availability of 8,000 wooden poles per year, starting in 2008. The project consists of the four components, namely: A) reinforcement of the production and extension of the MV and LV electricity networks; B) execution of distribution works; C) assembly of a wooden pole treatment unit; D) management of the project.
