Bharat Small Modular Reactor Deployment at Tarapur

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India is preparing to deploy the Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200) of 220 megawatts at the Tarapur Atomic Power Station site. This project is part of a roadmap to achieve 100 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2047 through private capital and small modular reactors. The plan includes a $1.09 billion fiscal package to support the first ten reactors, with a target of 25 units by the late 2030s, and 49 retiring coal sites lined up to host these reactors. The BSMR-200 is designed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and represents a shift to factory-built, small, repetitive reactors to achieve economies of multiples rather than economies of scale.
