Description | BharatNet is an ambitious Government of India project aimed at providing broadband connectivity to all Gram Panchayats (GPs) in the country. Approved in 2011, it is one of the largest rural telecom projects globally, executed by Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL). The project is implemented in phases, with Phase I completed in 2017 connecting 1 lakh GPs via optical fibre, Phase II expanding coverage to an additional 1.5 lakh GPs using optical fibre, radio, and satellite technologies, and Phase III focusing on future-proofing the network with 5G integration and increased bandwidth. The Amended BharatNet Program (ABP) approved in 2023 aims to provide optical fibre connectivity to 2.64 lakh GPs in ring topology and on-demand connectivity to remaining villages, including features like IP-MPLS network, 10 years operation and maintenance, power backup, and remote fibre monitoring. |
