Training in reindeer husbandry is now organised in four different countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia) according to each country’s own study plan. Each country uses its own way, language and study methods to carry out education in reindeer husbandry. These courses also follow national study requirements. There is a real need to test in practice the study plan for reindeer husbandry training, which was completed during the pilot project. At the heart of the joint teaching are skills that address common issues and challenges in Sami reindeer herding such as the use of land, climate change, predators, the economy of reindeer husbandry and traditional knowledge, and the use of new technologies. The reindeer management schools are prepared to accept the challenges of reindeer husbandry and look for solutions. The main objective of the Biegganjunáat project is to in practice test and offer Sápmi’s borders cross-border teaching in the form of teaching modules for students of reindeer herding in the reindeer husbandry schools in Sweden, Norway and Finland in such a way that the cooperation between reindeer husbandry schools after the project continues and streamlines in a natural way. At the same time, young reindeer herders are acquainted with each other and receive up-to-date high-quality education on reindeer herding in the Arctic area and solution options for current challenges in Sami reindeer herding. As project measures, eight different training modules for reindeer husbandry will be developed, creating and publishing related study materials for reindeer schools by making broad use of the expertise of reindeer herders in each country for the reindeer husbandry training courses.
