Description

Description

The BIO-AGE 2.0 project promotes inclusion and fairness in youth football by ensuring that both late- and early-maturing players receive equal development opportunities. Traditional scouting often favors early-maturing athletes, overlooking equally talented but later-developing players. This imbalance in talent identification leads to higher dropout rates and missed potential. By integrating biological age assessments into training and selection processes, BIO-AGE 2.0 provides coaches and academies with tools to support all players based on skill and long-term potential rather than physical maturity alone. This approach reduces bias, allowing late maturers to develop at their own pace, while also ensuring early maturers receive appropriate training to prevent burnout and overreliance on physicality. Although initially designed for football, the BIO-AGE methodology is adaptable to other team sports where biological maturity impacts performance, including basketball, rugby, and handball. The project provides open-access training materials and digital tools to facilitate its adoption in various sports disciplines, promoting a more inclusive and data-driven approach to talent identification. The project’s sustainability is secured through coaching education, digital resources, and collaboration with national federations. The BIO-AGE Hub, an open-access platform, will provide training materials and best practices, ensuring long-term impact beyond the project’s funding period. Through engagement with football federations, policymakers, and grassroots clubs, BIO-AGE 2.0 fosters a more balanced, player-centered approach to talent development. By recognizing and addressing biological differences, the project ensures that all young athletes - regardless of their maturation rate - have a fair chance to succeed, not only in football but in other team sports as well.
