Description
Description | Bio-aromatics are a sustainable alternative to existing petrochemical products that are difficult to recycle, such as paints, glues and lubricants. Scaling up the production of bio-aromatics and the application of these substances in high-quality applications are essential for a successful raw material transition from fossil to renewable. Biorizon Application Centre as a core platform for market development and collaboration for the application of bio-aromatics The Shared Research Center Biorizon, an initiative of TNO and VITO, has been developing innovative chemical technologies and processes for the production of sustainable bio-aromatics from biomass since 2013. Biorizon has become an important pillar in the regional Green Chemistry development and a flagship in the context of the bio-based economy. In the Interreg V-project BIO-HArT various technologies were scaled up for valorisation of biomass, lignin and sugars towards bio-aromatics. Now the project BIO-CAPPP – Biorizon Center for Applications & Products with Premium Properties – aims to develop an application centre where bio-aromatics can be tested and applied together with companies in concrete products to enable commercial production and application of bio-aromatics and stimulate market demand. The Biorizon Application Centre will be a place where SMEs can collaborate with knowledge workers and students on the development of bio-based applications that are close to the market. In this way, the Application Centre also provides an ideal breeding ground for language students and highly educated staff. Through training programmes, internships and STEM pathways, students and lecturers of higher education and secondary schools will be involved in the development and application of bio-aromatics. Based on this approach, the project aims to intensify cooperation with educational institutions and promote the influx of new talents into business. The Biorizon Application Centre is based on two pillars. On the one hand, it will become an interregional point of contact to support companies in their transition to bio-based materials. On the other hand, the Application Centre itself will develop innovative bio-based materials with a focus on taking the sustainable nature of the materials to a higher level. Bio-CAPPP and the resulting Biorizon Application Centre stimulate a faster and more successful market introduction of concrete bio-aromatic-based products. This should make it possible for SMEs/SMEs to make the move towards a bio-based economy and thus to become less dependent on petroleum. |
