The FC program Protected Areas and Biodiversity (Phase II) aims to promote effective management, biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources in selected protected areas in Colombia and their peripheral zones (module objective). The project is in line with the development policy priorities of the federal government and Colombia with regard to the protection and conservation of biodiversity and important ecosystems. FC supports investments in the following components: 1) Improving management effectiveness in selected priority nature reserves, including measures to equip the protected areas with infrastructure and equipment to enable the National Park Authority (PNN) to carry out their protective functions; 2) Improving nature conservation and the sustainable use of resources in selected protected areas and their peripheral zones, including measures to promote sustainable production and the promotion of local ecotourism. The concept of the project is based on an integrated approach that combines concrete support measures in selected protected areas with measures for the conceptual further development of management and support instruments in nature conservation and the increased integration of the peripheral areas of the protected areas in the support approach. The aim is to better ensure the sustainability of the funding measures and the desired effects with regard to nature conservation and the preservation of biodiversity in the protected areas under the special social conditions in many regions of the country. The project covers a total of 19 nature reserves in five regions of Colombia with a total area of around three million hectares, as well as selected peripheral areas. The immediate target group is the population living within and around the project's protected areas. Around 1.8 million people are expected to benefit from the project in and around the 19 protected areas. The total cost of the project is estimated at around EUR 23 million. The funding is provided by the Federal Development Fund, the project sponsor PNN and contributions from the beneficiary target groups. The Federal Development Fund's contribution amounts to EUR 20 million.
