BIOfabricated cellulose for personal CARE and quality of LIFE
Sector: Commercial • Location: Denmark, Germany
Source: EU Funding & Tenders Portal
The BIOCARE4LIFE project aims to bring to full-scale EcoFLEXY, the first cost-effective, high-performance, fully biobased, and biodegradable rheology modifier for the personal care industry. EcoFLEXY will replace fossil-based carbomers, known as harmful microplastics, significantly redicing the enviromental pollution and the use of hazardous chemicals, while delivering superior product performance

Description
Description | The BIOCARE4LIFE project aims to bring to full-scale EcoFLEXY, the first cost-effective, high-performance, fully biobased, and biodegradable rheology modifier for the personal care industry. EcoFLEXY will replace fossil-based carbomers, known as harmful microplastics, significantly redicing the enviromental pollution and the use of hazardous chemicals, while delivering superior product performance. By the project's end, EcoFLEXY will prevent the release of 259 tons of microplastic annually, with this figure rising to 1,289 tons per year by 2034. To achieve these expected impacts, the project will focus on scaling production, optimizing processes, and securing commercial validation of EcoFLEXY, positioning it as a game-changer in personal care industry. Led by Cellugy, the consortium unites experts in biotechnology, sustainability, and data management. The Footprint Firm will oversee the project's environmental impact, ensuring compliance with circular economy principles. Sic2Sci will implement FAIR data management, and ML/AI for the production process optimization. BIOCARE4LIFE supports the LIFE programme's objectives by protecting marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems from microplastics, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting resource-efficient industrial solutions. It also addresses human health concerns by eliminating hazardous chemicals (i.e. carbomers). By doing so, BIOCARE4LIFE also aligns with the European Green Deal's goals for a safer and more sustainable future. |
