Description

Description

This research responds to the pressing need to shift away from the wasteful linear economic model, which generates environmental problems and lacks sustainability. We focus on the Circular Economy (CE), which aims to reduce waste, conserve resources, and improve material and energy efficiency. The specific goal is to tackle the issue of unused agricultural waste, particularly olive waste in Mediterranean countries. This waste is a significant problem, with about 70% currently going unused, causing environmental and economic challenges. The approach involves extracting cellulose from olive waste to create valuable biohydrogels (BHGs), promoting waste valorization and sustainable resource management. The proposal combines innovative materials science with CE principles, green cellulose extraction, and advanced 3D printing techniques to create functional and sustainable materials from agricultural waste with versatility in production and application. Our team has expertise in agriculture, waste valorization, green materials science, and 3D printing technology. We are well-prepared to address this challenge through our experience and collaboration with the Technological Center for Plastics, Andaltec (AND). The research aligns with the European Commission's priority of transitioning to a circular economy, reducing waste, and enhancing resource efficiency. It is also timely given the urgency of environmental issues. Furthermore, our project provides a platform for skill development, collaboration, and interdisciplinary research, preparing us to contribute to MSCA-PF grants and sustainable research and innovation in Europe.
