bioXclusters+ - the European Strategic Cluster Partnership (ESCP) on Personalised Healthcare

Strengthening the international competitiveness of European SMEs in the life sciences sector beyond Europe is an essential task in an increasingly globalized environment. This is particularly crucial due to the observed growth effects following successful cross-border venturing, and the demonstrated capacity of SMEs to drive economic development at national, regional, and global levels (European Commission, 2007). Meeting the requirements of the accelerated globalization process and designing tailor-made internationalisation strategies, thanks to clusters, are crucial goals for biotechnological and medical technology sectors, which are by definition global. Current societal and economic challenges related the health sector require a change in the conventional approach, affecting the whole value chain. The global life sciences community is aware of these needs and one of the most successful, revolutionary concepts that has gained international regard in recent years is the concept of Personalised Healthcare. This scenario creates a big opportunity for the European life sciences and healthcare sector, with relevant positive consequences for Europe’s society and economy. With the strong ambition of addressing these global challenges, the 4 clusters involved in the bioXclusters alliance are taking the opportunity offered in the COSME framework to pursue their activities fostering their partnership becoming the unique European Strategic Cluster Partnership (ESCP) as meta-cluster on Personalised Healthcare named “bioXclusters+”. The bioXclusters+ approach, in the CIP pilot action continuity, will consist in 1. Confirm its position at the European and international scene in gaining visibility inside and outside Europe, 2. Reinforce trustful relations with third countries building „Gateways“, 3. Deploy common internationalisation tools and tailored support for SMEs, 4. Manage and closely monitor the activities to reach the targeted impact.
