Description | Bishoftu International Airport is a $12.5 billion mega airport project in Ethiopia aimed to rival Middle East connecting hubs. Construction began in January 2026 with an expected opening in 2030. The airport will initially handle 60 million passengers annually with two parallel runways and 180 aircraft parking stands. Phase two will expand capacity to 110 million passengers per year with four runways and 270 aircraft parking stands, along with expanded cargo facilities and airport city development. The project is designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and is intended to ease congestion at Bole Addis Ababa International Airport and position Ethiopia as a major global aviation gateway. |
