The first phase of Mumbai's BKC pod taxi project involves constructing a 3.36-km driverless personal rapid transit system to ease last-mile congestion in the business district. The initial corridor connects Kurla terminal station with Bandra East terminal station, covering key locations such as LBS Marg, MMRDA Pay and Park, BDB Gate 11, Kalanagar, Old MMRDA building, and the excise department. The system will feature six-seater, fully automated, battery-operated, AI-enabled pods operating at a maximum speed of 40 kmph with a 15-second headway and an on-demand stop mechanism. The full project is planned as an 8.85 km network with 22 stations, integrating with Metro Line 3 and Metro 2B stations, and is expected to serve 1.09 lakh daily commuters by 2031. It is implemented on a PPP model without direct cost to the state government or MMRDA.
