Description

Description

The project involves the construction of a 5 km undersea tunnel stretch between BKC and Shillphata using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). It includes a challenging 7 km segment beneath the Thane Creek. Tunneling started in May 2024, with a breakthrough achieved for a continuous 2.7 km section connecting the ADIT to the Savali shaft. Excavation between the Savali shaft and the tunnel portal at Shillphata is complete, enabling integration with the viaduct segment of the Mega Airport High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project. An Additional Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) was constructed to allow simultaneous excavation from both Ghansoli and Shilphata sides. The remaining 16 km of tunneling will be done using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnel will be a single tube of 13.1 meters diameter to accommodate twin tracks for both up and down lines. Comprehensive safety measures and access restrictions have been implemented to ensure safe tunneling.
