Blue Action Fund (BAF) - Phase VI

The project aims to intensify coastal and marine protection in partner countries of German development cooperation. The financial contributions from the FC to the Blue Action Fund (BAF) are intended to enable it to promote the preservation of networks of globally important coastal and marine protected areas (FC program objective). The foundation established for this purpose will use co-financing to enable international NGOs to improve the management of globally important marine and coastal protected areas and their host zones in cooperation with relevant institutions (module objective). The project sponsor is the BAF. The project area is located in selected regions of Africa, Asia/Pacific and Latin America/Caribbean and includes coastal and marine areas of particular ecological value. The direct target group of the project is the population of the host zones of marine and coastal areas worthy of protection. Through initial financial contributions (BMZ No. 2016.9751.5) totaling EUR 24 million (1st phase EUR 15 million, 2nd phase EUR 9 million), a consumption fund for the BAF was set up in 2016 with EUR 22 million and EUR 2 million was paid into the BAF's permanent foundation capital. For a third phase (BMZ No. 2017 97521), a further EUR 20 million was made available for the consumption fund in 2017, for a fourth phase (BMZ No. 2018 34043) in 2018, a further EUR 11.1 million for a fourth phase (BMZ No. 2018 34043) and a further EUR 24.783 million (including top-up) for a fifth phase in 2020/21 (BMZ No. 2020 48726). In 2023, EUR 9.9597 million has been pledged for a further continuation (Phase VI). The Swedish government has provided a total of EUR 21.7 million for 2017-2023, the French AFD EUR 10 million for 2018-2021, the Irish IRISHAID EUR 5 million for 2022-2024 and NORAD EUR 9.3 million for 2021-2024.
