Description

The Blue Whale project is a deepwater oil and gas exploration venture in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea, South Korea. It aims to explore and potentially develop a large-scale offshore hydrocarbon prospect believed to hold between 3.5 and 14 billion barrels of oil and gas. The project covers four offshore blocks totaling 20,058 square kilometers, with water depths of about 1,300 meters and planned drilling depths of 3,000 meters. Initially funded by the South Korean government and operated by Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC), the project faced disappointing initial drilling results and funding cuts, leading KNOC to seek foreign partners. BP plc emerged as the preferred foreign partner with a 49% interest, pending government approval.
