Description | BoliviaTel launched commercial operations on February 6, 2002 as a long distance (national and international) provider. BoliviaTel is made up of 6 Bolivian telecommunications cooperatives; Cooperativa de Telecomunicaciones Cochabamba (Comteco), Cotes, Coteor, Cotap, Coteautri, and Cotevi. Comteco, being the biggest shareholder with 60%, also is 30% partner in mobile operator NuevaTel PCS. Bolivia's two largest telecom cooperatives, Cotas and Cotel, which have their own large operations, did not want to become part of BoliviaTel. The six-coop group has invested an initial $10 million for the network roll out, and plans for the first phase for coverage of La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Oruro, Potosi, Chuquisaca and Tarija, will total $14.9 million. The planned second phase will expand BoliviaTel service to Trinidad and Pando, and other cities with 10,000 or more populace, which will bring the total investment to $26.6 million. |
