Description
Description | The Town of Bouctouche is currently seeking to upgrade its wastewater treatment system, also known as its municipal lagoon. Given the steadily aging infrastructure (the lagoon was built in 1976 with upgrades in 1990), major upgrades are required to ensure effective wastewater treatment. In the past few years, the impacts of climate change have been felt on the lagoon. The increase in heavy precipitation, the accelerated melting of snow in the spring and the many freeze-thaw cycles in the winter affect the lagoon’s operations. More often now than before, weather events are being seen to affect the lagoon, and the water level in the lagoon exceeds the values prescribed in the design standards for this type of treatment system. In the long term, if this situation is not corrected, stability risks and hazard risks for the operation will need to be anticipated. Although the proposed upgrades consist of an upgrading of the lagoon’s major components (new aeration system for both cells, installation of a new impermeable membrane, installation of a floating curtain to increase retention time, and the upgrading of equipment for controlling floating material and particulates to improve pre-treatment), it is also proposed that the height of the dikes be increased in order to increase the efficacy of the treatment and mitigate the risks associated with climate change. |
