Description
Description | BRO is a community-based project aiming to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) by dismantling harmful gender norms and promoting inclusive, emotionally healthy models of masculinity among (Roma) boys aged 15–29. The project focuses on the community level, where toxic masculinity is most often reinforced, particularly through informal peer environments and digital culture, and where (Roma) boys are frequently excluded from institutional prevention efforts. BRO engages boys through structured, interest-based workshops combining sports, gaming, peer dialogue, and digital media creation. These activities serve as accessible spaces for exploring topics such as respect, consent, emotional literacy, and self-regulation. Peer mentoring is a central element, promoting mutual support, accountability, and long-term behavioural change. Boys also take part in co-creating media content—videos, podcasts, and social media materials—that challenge GBV and offer alternative models of masculinity rooted in empathy and equality. At the same time, BRO strengthens the capacities of youth workers who work closely with boys in community settings. A dedicated training programme offers practical guidance on identifying and addressing GBV, engaging boys in non-formal settings, and overcoming barriers such as internalised gender norms or generational gaps in digital understanding. Youth workers are supported through toolkits, mentoring, and reflection sessions to integrate gender-transformative practice into their daily work. In parallel, BRO works with local public officials to promote gender-sensitive governance. Through policy labs, training, and institutional dialogue, the project addresses structural barriers, challenges anti-gender and anti-Roma narratives, and ensures alignment between grassroots prevention and public action. BRO contributes to programme goals through an integrated approach that connects youth engagement, professional capacity-building, and institutional change. |
