Description
Description | The project comprises the construction and operation of a 6 thermal power plants (diesel) with total installed capacity of 368MW in the states of Espirito Santo, Alagoas, and Sergipe. The company responsible for the project is Brasympe Energia SA, a consortium comprising the Brazilian Grupo MPE, previously known as Montagem de Projetos Especiais, SoEnergy, a subsidiary of the Brazilian company Sotreq, and BR Distribuidora(20%), a subsidiary of the state-owned Petrobras. The total investment in the project was estimated at US$184 million. In Espirito Santo, four plants were implemented: Tubarao (40MW), commissioned in February 2002, Ponta do Ubu (40MW), Carapina (40MW), and Civit (20MW), commissioned in June 2002. The total investments in the Espirito Santo plants was estimated at US$70 million. The Rio Largo plant (168MW), in Alagoas, and the Jardim plant(60MW), in Sergipe, were commissioned in August 2002. The total estimated investments for these two plants were US$114 million. In January 2002, Brasympe signed a PPA with the Brazilian Commerce Chamber for Emergency Energy (CBEE), which is a three-year take-or-pay contract for the full capacity of the six plants. Brasympe power plants are part of a priority program for thermal power plants (Programa Prioritario de Termeletricas), implemented by the Brazilian federal government in 2000. The program, in order to foster the construction of thermal power plants, provides a short-term take-or-pay contract and, in some cases, financing for the construction of the plants (through the Brazilian Development Bank, BNDES). As of December 2009, the shareholding structure of Brasympe had changed to state-owend BR Distribuidora (20%), Brazil Energy (26,66%), Sotreq (26,66%) and MPE (26,66%).
