Approximately 700,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand were relocated to strengthen and sustain the island’s coastal system, enhancing shoreline and navigation safety along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW). The sand was placed in the intertidal zone to be naturally distributed by waves and tides, providing multiple benefits without additional cost to the City of Isle of Palms.
